The tale of seven sisters is
A strange one to be sure.
Their two decades upon the earth
Weren't easy to endure.

The tale of seven sisters starts
Out on the emerald seas,
Where a small strand of a country
Lost countless families.

They all fled dreaming of freedom,
Suenos de la Yuma,
Pesos, peces, allegria…
La madre. Su mama.

The tale of seven sisters born
With brown hands and pink feet
Deep, deep down between two nations
Who still refuse to meet…

It falls down to the eldest girl,
Poverty was her name.
She taught her sisters many skills,
The ways to cheat the game.

All games were rigged for them to lose,
The twins would always say.
That's what elder sister Gender
Told them every day.

The twins were seen as one person,
As twins so often were,
Halves of one loud duo called Race,
One blacker, one whiter.

Gender and Sexuality
Did not always agree.
Gender wanted to belong, but
Sex wanted to be free.

Language and ethnicity, too,
Had their fences to mend.
Although language was the youngest,
She would always defend.

Ethnicity was quiet and
Easy to ignore in
The ocean teeming with Others
Who through shared name were kin.

One day the once-lost sister, Body,
Her being made of sun,
Embarked on a hero's journey
To make her sisters one.

The tale of seven sisters is
A strange one to be sure.
Their two decades upon the earth
Weren't easy to endure.
Some poetry. This was my final creative project for my Multicultural Counseling program. Feel free to ask questions. :)
